Color and Style Trends
After attending a seminar on color, I learned a great deal about how color affects us all psychologically and how it relates to interiors. For example, using a lot of yellow in a kitchen can cause more arguing for the people occupying the space. Yellow would be best used in small quantities or areas where we don't spend extensive time, such as a foyer or laundry room. Another major topic discussed at the seminar were color and style trends of the new millennium. Here are a few of them:
There is a growing global influence. Ancient tribal and natural materials are being used to satisfy us on a deep level, as well as Japanese influences to create serene spaces.
Stylizing and combining patterns from different cultures is becoming more popular, such as using French colors (softer tones) on a native American patterned fabric, or creating a zebra pattern using yellow and white instead of black and white.
Creating interiors to be flexible enough to mix accessories.
Creating spaces that are whimsical and use humor. Using elements such as these gives us permission that we don't have to be perfect.
Returning to the arts and crafts for furnishings and accessories give a more personal feeling to the space and can be used to add whimsy.
As I work on many of your homes, I see many of these influences showing up already. Many of these ideas are used on the fabrics and materials that are available. What interests me more is that there seems to be a collective consciousness that has naturally gravitated to these trends.
The bottom line of design and decorating is to become aware of what colors, textures, patterns, and so on, feel good and work for you.
